Iga Swiatek hurting tennis by wearing ‘her hat so low’: Jimmy Arias

Jimmy Arias has a problem with the way Iga Swiatek plays tennis.

The former men’s world No. 5 and now commentator for Tennis Channel said Swiatek, who is the current women’s world No. 1, was not “great” for the sport.

“From my standpoint, I don’t think she’s been great for women’s tennis,” Arias said on the “Inside In” podcast.

“Because she wears her hat so low that you can’t even see her face or her eyes during a match, so you don’t get a connection as much as you could. I don’t mind her getting angry in some ways, but I want to see her personality.”

Swiatek, 22, is the top player in the world, and you could no doubt see her smiling under her hat Sunday when she won her fourth title of the season and 15th of her career.

While the Polish tennis star was knocked out of Wimbledon 2023 in the quarterfinals by Elina Svitolina, she redeemed herself on her home court at the Poland Open last weekend.

Swiatek beat Germany’s Laura Siegemund 6-0, 6-1 on Sunday to secure the title.

“I want to thank my team and my family,” Swiatek said, according to EuroSport

“It’s not easy to play in Warsaw, but I’m so happy that we could manage and do everything we could today, after a pretty tiring day yesterday. I wanted to put it all in and go for it. I’m pretty happy that I did.”

The Poland Open victory comes after Swiatek opened the season with the Doha International and Stuttgart Open titles before winning her fourth Grand Slam trophy at the French Open in June.

Arias, who retired from tennis in 1994, also made comments about Nick Kyrgios, which prompted the Australian pro to hit back on Twitter on Sunday.

Arias, 58, took a shot at the time off Kyrgios has taken, partially due to injury, and claimed he “doesn’t do all the things that are actually difficult and make it hard,” according to Tennis World

“You got some sort of issue? Although I had no idea who you were before my mate messaged me 10 mins ago, I’d appreciate if you kept my name out of your mouth to keep you relevant… well at least to give you some form of credibility,” Kyrgios said to Arias on Twitter
